Year 7 Regional Readers Cup Competition

Readers Cup competitions for 2021 concluded recently with the exciting Year 7 event, the final for the year, taking place at St John’s Catholic College at Nambour last Thursday 21 October. Our enthusiastic team: Isabella Buckland, Oliver Geeves, Isabel Smith, and Olivia Watson-Brown took up the challenge of reading 5 books, a total of 1236 pages in preparation for this year’s challenging competition.

From the ‘big reveal’ of the books during Book Week right through to the competition evening, these students chatted about their favourites and encouraged each other to keep on reading right up to the last minute! These avid readers enjoyed the challenge of reading and setting practice questions before entering the ‘arena’ of fast quiz questions and even quicker answers. Finishing one point behind 3rd place only added to the excitement. Well done to our team for their enthusiastic effort, positive attitude and for their love of reading!

Different authors, titles and genres are selected for each Readers Cup Competition and the excitement of reading together with friends is great motivation to keep on reading. Every reader is a winner when they are captivated by exciting plot twists and where they meet quirky, quaint or quarrelsome characters. Students enlarge their worlds, learn to understand different perspectives, grow their vocabulary and get to be part of great conversations! There are so many reasons to get hooked on reading and to participate in the Readers Cup!

Congratulations to all the GCC Readers Cup teams for 2021 and well done for taking on the challenge, choosing to read and choosing to grow. All the best as you continue those great story conversations and discover your next great read! All students in Year 5 – 9 keen to join Readers Cup in 2022 can contact Mrs McKellar and Mrs Morris for details for next year’s competitions.
