Primary Sports Awards

It was fantastic to have all the Upper Primary students with us to celebrate the sporting achievements of our students over 2021. The event was a showcase of all the sports our students participate and compete in at GCC during PE lessons, specialised programs and Interschool and District sport.

Due to the new format and travel restrictions, having a guest speaker was a challenge but we were privileged to have a video sent to us by Nicola McDermott who won silver at the Tokyo Olympics in high jump. Nicola is a committed christian who loves to share her love for God so she was a great inspiration for our students. The students were even clapping her on, in time with the crowd as we watched a video of her silver medal jump. They erupted in cheers when she cleared the 2.02 bar setting a new Australian record.

Students received awards for Most Valuable Player Awards in our Interschool Sport competitions and also Age Champions of swimming, cross country and athletics. Students accumulate points over the year for every sport they participate in and receive Gold, Silver or Bronze awards if they score enough points.

Twenty-nine students received one of these awards which showed their commitment to sport over the year. Three students won the Gold Award after representing GCC, our Glasshouse District or the Sunshine Coast in a wide variety of sports. The Gold Awardees were Kobe Adamson, Indigo Hetheringto and Flynn Lewis.

The Highest Sporting Achiever Awards were presented to Lily Short and Zander Carlson for their efforts in representing Queensland in Show Jumping and Hockey. Both Lily and Zander train and compete regularly in these sports and competed at the State Titles. Lily is the current Queensland Primary Show Jumping Champion and Zander was selected into the State team at the State Championships.

The most prestigious award is the Primary Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award.

Our Sportswoman of the Year, Indigo Hetherington represented GCC at Interschool sport in softball, netball and touch, and also competed in the Glasshouse District Cross Country and Athletics qualifying for Regionals in both of these. She was the GCC 11yr Girls Athletics Age Champion.

Indi was a valuable member of the Glasshouse District Netball and Touch Football teams competing at the Regional Carnivals. She has also been a regular at Early morning training as well as participated in surfing, mountain biking, soccer and volleyball.

Our Sportsman of the Year is Kobe Adamson. Kobe was the GCC 11 yr boys Athletics Age Champion and went on to compete in the District Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. He qualified for Regional Athletics.

Kobe was a member of our A Boys Touch team and B Boys Softball team which both won the Glasshouse District Interschool Sport competition. A rugby union player at heart – this young man has also competed at the Regional Carnivals this year for Rugby Union, Rugby League and Touch Football.

We are excited to have such quality athletes who are committed to our College sports teams and are proud to represent GCC at District and Regional levels.
