What a fantastic term it has been in Primary Chess Club! Each Monday at first break, our room has been full of excited players from Years 1–6, ranging from curious beginners to confident masters, all keen to sharpen their moves.
This term we welcomed Mrs James, a highly skilled chess player and instructor, who has been an incredible support for our students. With her help, we alternated between “beginner skills” weeks and “master skills” weeks so that everyone could enjoy learning at their level. Beginners discovered how to set up the board, what each piece can do, and how to finish a game with confidence. Our masters stretched their brains with puzzles, explored tricky techniques, and even started learning chess notation like real tournament players!
Next term we will finish the year with our very first in-house chess tournament. There will be a beginner’s competition and a master’s competition, giving every student a chance to shine. We cannot wait to cheer on our young champions as they put their skills to the test!
