National History Challenge – State Awards Success

Earlier this year, our Year 4 English Honours group embarked on an inquiry into Conflict and Resolution as part of the National History Challenge. Through a historical lens, students explored the perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, focusing their research on the story of Uluru — its naming and renaming, its cultural significance, and the ban on climbing the sacred site. This inquiry encouraged students to think critically about how stories are told, whose voices are heard, and how historical events can shape the way we understand the world today.

Students expressed their understanding in a wide variety of creative and thoughtful ways, from developing interactive coded games on Scratch to writing diary entries, producing mock ‘Behind the News’ reports, and crafting detailed written reports and artworks. The diversity of responses reflected not only their grasp of historical content but also their emerging confidence as communicators and creators.

We are incredibly proud to share that three of our students were recognised at the State level for their outstanding submissions. Ivy Bastian produced a thoughtful, engaging documentary, earning a Silver Award for her research. Anna Packer also received a Silver Award, presenting her findings in a written report accompanied by a beautifully painted original artwork. Eady Lange combined historical research with a detailed 3D paper-mâché model of Uluru based on photographs and geological features. She accompanied her model with a comprehensive written report and a video explaining her process, earning the Primary Category 1 Gold Award at State level, along with a $100 prize and gold medal.

These three students were invited to attend the State Awards Ceremony held at Anglican Church Grammar School, where they were formally acknowledged for their achievements. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for Ivy, Anna and Eady, along with their families, to celebrate their success among students and educators from across Queensland. Seeing our students recognised alongside peers from a wide range of schools was a joyful reminder of the talent, curiosity and dedication within our College community.
