Recently, our Year 4 students engaged in an interactive cultural experience beneath the shelter on the Eastern Oval. The event featured a weaving incursion led by Gubi Gubi/Kabi Kabi women, members of a First Nations community from the Sunshine Coast region. This special activity provided the students with an opportunity to dive into the rich traditions of the Kabi Kabi people and explore the ancient art of basket weaving.
The women shared their knowledge of weaving techniques, which have been carefully passed down through generations. Throughout the process, the children also gained insight into the significance of weaving in Kabi Kabi culture and its vital connection to the land, ancestors, and community.
This incursion helped to deepen the students’ understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures. The Year 4 cohort was inspired by the stories and wisdom shared by the Elders, gaining a profound appreciation for the importance of preserving these cultural traditions. They left the experience with a stronger connection to the Kabi Kabi people and a greater awareness of the rich cultural heritage within our community.
We extend our thanks to the Gubi Gubi/Kabi Kabi women for their time and wisdom to this incursion.
