Science Week 10 – 18 August

Primary Science Show

On Thursday 15 August, the Science Ambassadors namely: Uyapo Kombanie; Dominique McLaren; Elizabeth Walters; Abi Sidey and Aimee Cullen organised a number of experiments to demonstrate to the Primary school students.

Dominique demonstrated the ‘lolli-pop’ reaction where a chupa chup swirled in a beaker that had potassium permanganate dissolved in a sodium hydroxide solution changed colour from purple to dark blue to dark green and eventually to yellow.

Elizabeth and Abi demonstrated the reaction named “Out of the Blue” where the reaction colour changes from aqua blue to a vibrant orange and back to aqua blue.

Uyapo demonstrated the chemical reaction to produce ‘Elephant Toothpaste’. The Primary students were surprised at the amount of the colourful product that erupted from the flask.

Mr Doolan demonstrated a chemical reaction to produce hydrogen gas. After collecting the hydrogen in a balloon he attached the balloon to a metre ruler and exploded it using a candle. The explosion really made the Primary students excited and slightly deaf.

Aimee demonstrated the hair-raising effects of the Van der Graaf generator. A number of brave victims (I mean volunteers) wilfully risked being zapped by this static-producing device. It definitely ended up being a hair-raising experience for these volunteers.

I would like to thank all the Year 11 Science Ambassadors involved for their excellent demonstrations and for their time and enthusiasm.

Finally, I would also like to thank Ms Ford for her assistance with setting up the demonstrations.
