Four Curious School Traditions from Around the World

Schools may share common goals, but around the globe they have developed some wonderfully unique traditions that build connection, pride and a sense of belonging. Here are a few that might surprise you:

Japan – The Daily Clean-Up
In many Japanese schools, students clean their own classrooms, hallways and even bathrooms. Known as souji, this daily routine teaches responsibility, teamwork and respect for shared spaces. There is no negotiating over who “forgot” it was their turn. It is simply part of belonging to the community. Imagine suggesting this at home and seeing how that goes.

Finland – Learning Through Play
Finnish schools are famous for shorter school days and longer breaks. Outdoor play is prioritised, even in the snow. Research from the Finnish National Agency for Education highlights how regular breaks improve focus and wellbeing. Sometimes stepping back actually helps students move forward. It is comforting to know that a snowball fight can, in fact, be educational.

Ghana – Colourful Speech and Debate Days
Many schools in Ghana host vibrant speech and debate days where students dress in bright house colours and compete passionately in public speaking. These events are community celebrations, drawing families together and building confidence in young voices.

While these traditions differ in style, they share a common thread. Schools flourish when students feel connected, responsible and proud to belong. The routines may look different, but the heart behind them is the same.

At Glasshouse Christian College, we are deeply committed to nurturing confident learners and strong community ties. From Prep to Year 12, our students are encouraged to grow academically, socially and spiritually in an environment that values both excellence and character. On any given day you might see a Year 6 student helping a Prep child to read, a Year 9 robotics project taking shape, or a teacher patiently explaining long division for the fifteenth time with a smile.

One of the best ways to experience this sense of community is at our upcoming Open Day on Saturday 16 May from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Open Day is more than a tour. It is a chance to see learning in action, meet the staff who invest so faithfully in your children, and watch our students proudly showcase their classrooms, performances and projects. There will be plenty to see, plenty to celebrate.

If you have friends, neighbours or family members who are interested in finding out more about GCC then this is the perfect opportunity. There is something powerful about seeing a school community firsthand, and children do love showing off “their” classroom.

As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Our privilege is to partner with you in that journey, with wisdom, warmth and the occasional well timed laugh.

We look forward to welcoming you on 16 May.
