Our Year 6 students recently had the exciting opportunity to welcome Dr David Midgley from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation
(CSIRO) to our college. As part of their current studies in microbiology, students were inspired by Dr Midgley’s engaging presentation on the hidden world of
microbes and the vital roles they play in ecosystems, health, and industry.
Dr Midgley shared fascinating insights from his work as a microbiologist, helping students understand that microbes are not just “germs,” but essential organisms that help decompose waste, recycle nutrients, and even support life in extreme environments. His talk connected beautifully with the students’ classroom learning and sparked many thoughtful questions.
Following the presentation, students participated in a hands-on investigation by collecting environmental samples from around the school grounds. Using sterile swabs, they gathered samples from surfaces such as soil, leaves, and outdoor equipment, which were then transferred onto agar plates to grow microbial colonies. The excitement was tangible as students prepared to observe the results of their own scientific inquiry in the days ahead.
This authentic science experience not only deepened students’ understanding of microbiology but also gave them a glimpse into real-world scientific research. We are incredibly grateful to Dr Midgley and CSIRO for investing in the curiosity and scientific development of our young learners.
