There’s a hum in the rooms of our high-potential Horizons and Honours programs this term, not of busy activity, but of minds buzzing and ideas forming. Step inside and you’ll find students reasoning, experimenting, designing, and questioning in ways that extend and deepen their learning.
Some of our youngest students have been sharpening their problem-solving skills in preparation for the Bebras Challenge, an international computational thinking competition. They are learning to break complex problems into manageable steps, identify patterns, and test logical solutions. Others have tackled Fermi investigations in Mathematics, estimating questions such as how many times a person might blink in a day or how many stacked books it would take to reach the ceiling. Initial “wild guesses” give way to more logical estimates as assumptions are identified and refined. Students test smaller calculations as a way of approximating larger quantities and adjust their thinking when the numbers do not quite fit. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a single figure, but on thoughtful estimation, sound reasoning, and the discipline of checking whether an answer makes sense.
Some activities have explored the concept of ‘voice’ in history, examining how individuals and groups have sparked change through speeches, literature, protest posters, blogs, and even quiet acts of courage. Students were particularly struck by examples where that voice belonged to another child, prompting reflection on influence, responsibility, and the ways ideas gain momentum.
Students in the mid-years have been exploring the concept of time through multiple lenses. They examined how different civilisations tracked and interpreted time, experimented with Rube Goldberg-style systems to design their own ways of measuring it, and explored the concept metaphorically through artworks and poetry. They investigated principles of measurement and oscillation, applying their understanding of latitude to calculate the precise angle of the gnomon so that their sundials would work accurately in Beerwah. By approaching one idea from many perspectives at once, students experienced how knowledge connects and deepens when disciplines overlap.
Meanwhile, older students have been exploring a “future problem” related to invasive species, analysing the challenges and unintended consequences of previous approaches. As they investigate the problem, they are learning to identify underlying issues and consider the complexity of real-world decision-making. They will then begin developing potential solutions, building on the understanding that complex problems rarely have simple answers. Their conversations extend beyond science into ethics, economics, and global responsibility, highlighting the importance of thoughtful, informed reasoning.
While the topics vary, the purpose remains consistent. Our high-potential programs are not designed to race ahead of the curriculum; they are about deepening understanding and providing space for students to wrestle with ambiguity and engage with ideas that do not have immediate or straightforward answers. Across the College, students are challenged daily through a rich curriculum and dedicated teaching, while programs such as Honours and Horizons offer additional space for curiosity to flourish and for students to grapple with complexity.
Increasingly, students are learning that not every worthwhile question has a single correct answer, and that careful reasoning, considered judgement, and the ability to view a problem from multiple perspectives — including global and ethical ones — matter just as much as the solution itself.
