Mathematics isn’t just about memorising times tables or completing pages of sums. Higher order mathematical thinking comes from problem-solving, using prior knowledge and understanding in new and creative ways. When children engage in problem-solving, they’re applying their knowledge, making connections, and developing critical thinking skills that will serve them for life.
Problem-solving is the ability to take what you already know and apply it to a new or unfamiliar situation. It’s about reasoning, making sense of numbers, and finding solutions rather than just following a set of steps. Unlike rote learning, which focuses on repetition, problem-solving encourages deep understanding.
Parents can encourage problem-solving at home in practical ways. Cooking involves maths, ask your child to double a recipe, halve it, or convert measurements. Shopping provides opportunities to estimate totals or calculate discounts. Time challenges, such as figuring out when to leave for an event, develop planning skills. Board games, puzzles, and DIY projects also help children think logically and strategically. Instead of giving answers, ask guiding questions like “What do you already know that might help?” This approach fosters resilience, confidence, and a love for problem-solving that extends beyond mathematics.
Encouraging problem-solving in everyday life helps children develop perseverance, creativity, and confidence in tackling challenges. These skills not only strengthen their mathematical understanding but also prepare them for future problem-solving in school, work, and life. By making maths meaningful and engaging, children learn to approach challenges with curiosity and determination.
