Marine Field Studies Camp – Moreton Island

Recently, Year 11 and Year 12 students from the Biology and the Duke of Ed program travelled to Moreton Island to participate in our first marine field studies camp. They enjoyed exploring Tangalooma Reef through snorkelling and scuba diving, gathering information on water quality and the health of marine life on Tangalooma Reef. Additionally, they looked closer at how campers impact nearby beach areas.

As they prepared for this study, the students were trained in various data collection methods by Steve Kerry (Subsurface Scuba) and Mrs Draper (Biology Teacher). They learned how to take water samples at different depths, record data on the health and abundance of marine life, and measure the impact of human activities in water and on land in this delicate ecosystem. The skills they gained will allow them to participate in future marine studies along our local waterways and support students interested in pursuing marine studies after graduating from GCC.

While the main focus was on scientific work, students also built fantastic relationships and created some wonderful memories together. From enjoying stunning sunsets, sharing delicious meals, and tackling unexpected challenges, they had plenty of chances to bond and take away some valuable life lessons. After two wonderful, sun-filled days in Moreton, the weather suddenly changed on Friday morning as our group was packing up camp to return home. The rain came down for a few hours, which made packing a bit tricky and gave some students their first experience of camping in the rain! In true Australian style, the rain cleared just after the campers finished packing up! This change allowed everyone to enjoy a refreshing swim before boarding the MICAT ferry to head home.

We greatly appreciate the fantastic support from the team at SubSurface Scuba. Their expertise and guidance over the last few months have been invaluable in making this marine field studies camp a success. Together, we look forward to making a positive impact on our local marine ecosystems in future field studies.
