Primary Chess Club Off to a Fantastic Start

There was great excitement today as the Primary Chess Club began again at Glasshouse Christian College. Held during first break and open to students from Year 1 to Year 6, the club welcomed players of all abilities. With 40 students attending the first session, it was a very successful and encouraging start.

One of the highlights of the morning was the wide range of experience among the students. Some participants were highly skilled players who confidently planned their moves and demonstrated strong strategies. Others were beginners who are still learning the rules, and several students were trying chess for the very first time. It was wonderful to see everyone playing together, regardless of experience.

A particularly positive aspect of the session was the way students supported one another. More experienced players willingly helped beginners, explaining how the pieces move and offering helpful tips. There were many moments of students teaching each other, showing patience and kindness as they shared their knowledge. At the same time, many games were played simply for fun, with laughter and friendly competition creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Chess provides students with valuable opportunities to develop important skills. It encourages critical thinking, problem solving and careful planning. Players learn to think ahead, consider different possibilities and make thoughtful decisions. Just as importantly, chess promotes resilience and good sportsmanship. Throughout the session, students showed respect for one another, congratulating opponents and setting up boards ready for the next game.

The strong attendance on the first day reflects the enthusiasm for chess across the Primary School. Every table was busy, and there was a steady buzz of conversation as students discussed moves and strategies. Even those who were unsure at the beginning quickly became engaged once they joined a game or watched others play.

Chess Club will continue to run during first break and remains open to all Primary students in Years 1 to 6. Whether students are experienced players looking to develop their skills or complete beginners who would like to learn, everyone is welcome to join.

Today was an excellent first day, and it was wonderful to see so many students participating with such enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing the club continue to grow as students build their skills, enjoy friendly competition and develop new friendships in the weeks ahead.
