Learning a new language is more than memorising words—it’s about connecting spoken and written forms in a way that truly brings the language to life.
This semester, we have started integrating a new phonics-based approach across all our French units for Years 2 through 6.
By embedding phonics into our regular lessons, we’re equipping students with the skills to decode and understand the unique relationship between written and spoken French. French presents special challenges for English-speaking learners, with sounds and silent letters that don’t always match English expectations. Our phonics unit breaks down 26 core sounds that either don’t exist in English or are pronounced differently, helping students decode French with more confidence.
Through fun, practical words—like colours, numbers, days, months, and animals—students will learn the “code” of French, linking sound, action, and spelling to create a lasting connection between speaking and writing. With this approach, we are building a stronger, more confident foundation in French for all our students, empowering them to read, pronounce, and enjoy the language independently.
As we approach the holiday season, I would like to extend a heartfelt Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année to you and your families. May your holiday be filled with joy and peace!
