A Hat-Trick of Success for GCC at Kids’ Lit Quiz

At the end of last term, three teams of avid readers from Years 6–8 represented Glasshouse Christian College at the Sunshine Coast Regional Heats of the Kids’ Lit Quiz, held at Pacific Lutheran College. This exciting competition challenged students’ literary knowledge across ten themed rounds, each drawing on a wide range of texts and genres.

In teams of four, students drew on their collective knowledge of literature to work through a wide range of challenges, relying on recall, careful thinking and teamwork. Each team selected a “bonus” category where correct answers would earn double points, adding a strategic layer to the competition. With excitement running high, the competition remained incredibly close throughout the day, with the top teams separated by only a small margin, truly making it anyone’s game right until the final round.

What ultimately proved decisive was the bonus category. Our Year 7 team made a bold strategic choice, selecting the “Orphans” theme as their double-point round. With teams required to choose based solely on topic titles, this was a calculated risk, but our team backed their judgment and were rewarded with an outstanding score in this section, securing overall first place in a tightly contested competition.

We are thrilled to celebrate our winning team of Evie C, Levi, Ivy and Andy, who have now secured a remarkable third consecutive Kids’ Lit Quiz victory for GCC. They will go on to represent the College in the National Finals at the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney later in May.

Adding to the success, another Middle School GCC team achieved an outstanding equal second-place finish, with Amelia, Matilda, Georgina and Hannah competing strongly in a field where every point counted.

Our Year 6 team also performed exceptionally well, achieving fourth place overall with the third-highest score of the competition. This team, comprising Hamilton, Mac, Evie L and Lucas, brought strong teamwork and plenty of enthusiasm to every round.

Across all teams, students represented GCC with pride, demonstrating excellent collaboration, strategic thinking and sportsmanship in a competitive environment. It was a fantastic day of learning and enthusiasm, with students returning not only with great memories but also with plenty of new books to enjoy.

Congratulations to all students involved for their outstanding efforts and achievements. We look forward to cheering on our national finalists as they take on the best in Australia later this term.
