Student Spotlight – Kathrine B, Heavy Diesel Mechanic

Kathrine’s journey is a great example of persistence, adaptability, and making the most of every opportunity.

After spending time working alongside her family on their farm, Kathrine discovered an interest in working with machinery. Keen to explore this further, she undertook work experience with a local business as part of her Year 10 program. It didn’t take long for her to make an impression—her strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and coachability stood out, and the business indicated they would be keen to take her on as a School Based Apprentice if a position became available the following year.

Motivated by this opportunity, Kathrine continued building her skills and experience, returning to the business during school holidays and on selected school days. She remained committed and proactive, doing everything she could to prepare for the next step in her pathway.

While things didn’t go exactly to plan—when the business needed to take on a full-time apprentice instead—Kathrine’s efforts were far from wasted. Recognising her potential, the team strongly recommended her to another local company.

That recommendation proved invaluable. After completing a short period of work experience and attending an interview, Kathrine was successfully offered a School Based Apprenticeship.

Today, Kathrine is thriving in her role with Northside Diesel and 4×4, where she continues to develop her skills and pursue her passion for working with machinery, while she finishes her schooling here at GCC. Her journey highlights that even when plans change, dedication and a positive attitude can open new doors—and often lead to even better opportunities.

Words from Kathrine:

“My favourite part that I have learnt so far is pin and bush work, and second would be pulling a whole motor out”.

Words from Dirk, her manager:

When we first met Kathrine, she arrived in work clothes, dirty work clothes, as she had just finished work for the day. We sensed immediately that she was not afraid of work.

We look for certain qualities when we consider hiring staff, particularly apprentices. We look for a strong work ethic, an ability to follow directions, work in a team environment and be curious. Katherine has those attributes and is not afraid to get stuck into work and get her hands dirty.

She has demonstrated the ability to work with the team, follow directions, and work closely with all the tradesmen, who have shown support and provided mentoring.

If we can give any advice to people wanting to gain a trade qualification, it is to bring your best each and every day to work, listen and learn from those who have gone before you. Be curious. Ask questions”.

Kathrine’s journey is a reminder to all students: stay committed, take every opportunity, and trust that hard work will pay off.
