Hermitage DAF Plant Science Competition

A massive CONGRATULATIONS  is in order for the Year 10 Agricultural Science students! In an Australia wide competition, the Year 10 Aggies have managed to take away second Overall Class in the Department of Agriculture Hermitage Research Schools Plant Science Competition and second in the QuestaGame competition. There is more at the end of this email if you want to know exactly how much they did to achieve this. As part of this, there were some very notable wins by specific students:

Tate Doneathy $1000 Plant Science Symposium Award where he will be fully paid to attend the two-day conference. UQ FEAST (Food, Engineering, Agriculture, Science and Technology) $450 Scholarship The Crawford Fund International Agricultural Science Award Winner $350 QUT Poster Award – Highly Commended.

Ebony King Paul Johnston Memorial Senior Science Award – Runner Up $500 UQ FEAST (Food, Engineering, Agriculture, Science and Technology) $450 Scholarship QUT Most Outstanding Poster Award Winner $150. $1000 Plant Science Symposium Award where she will be fully paid to attend the two-day conference (TBA).

Connor Ferguson $1000 Plant Science Symposium Award where he will be fully paid to attend the two-day conference.

Coby Schmeicle has not won awards, however, has been asked to perform his song on global food security at the awards ceremony!

Please be sure to congratulate all of the Aggies for doing such an amazing job! They are in Warwick this week to attend the awards ceremony.

WHAT WAS INVOLVED?

1. Conduct an experimental investigation into Net Blotch disease growth and its effect on barley production, growing and write a scientific report.

2. Compile an insect collection and weed herbarium.

3. Present a poster on an invasive pest or disease in Australia.

4. Communicate in a presentation on how invasive pests and diseases impact global food security.
