In 2020, Readers Cup competitions across the state have looked quite different to previous years and unfortunately most of the competitions held earlier in the year were cancelled due to COVID. However, we were very excited to see the Year 7 Competition take place as planned and it was wonderful that it coincided with the rescheduled Book Week 2020 celebrations. Last Thursday 22 October, our enthusiastic team: Charles Atkinson, Aimee Cullen, Danny Draper, Ellie Nyenhof and Elizabeth Walters excitedly competed in the Year 7 Sunshine Coast Regional Readers Cup Competition held at Good Samaritan Catholic College at Bli Bli.
From the ‘big reveal’ of the books in August right through to the competition evening, the team chatted about their favourites and encouraged each other to keep on reading right up to the last minute! These avid readers enjoyed the challenge of reading, setting quiz questions for themselves (and each other) before entering the ‘arena’ of fast questions and even quicker answers pitted against 16 teams from other schools and colleges on the Sunshine Coast. Well done to our GCC team for your positive attitude, team collaboration and high level of commitment to the reading challenge.
Reading by choice is a powerful motivator in a world of so many options. Different authors, titles and genres are selected for each Readers Cup Competition and the excitement and entertainment is enjoyed by participants and organisers alike. Every reader is a winner when they embark on a journey to undisclosed destinations where they meet quirky, quaint or quarrelsome characters who are involved in a dramatic or intriguing plot! The Year 7 Team recommends all the titles from the competition – so take a look and discover your next great read!

All students in Year 6 – 9 keen to join Readers Cup in 2021 can contact Mrs McKellar and Mrs Morris to be on the list to be notified about details for next year’s competitions.
