During Week 6 the Year 5s got to go away on camp to Maranatha Boulder Creek.
It was a time when the cohort got to head off to a new campsite and have some time away from their normal routine to focus on the question “What is a servant leader?”.
Students are invited to participate in many fun and engaging activities like archery, high ropes, buggy building, survival skills and regaining (an adventure strategy sport) and then enjoy some relaxing creek exploration hunting for yabbies and fish.
Each of these activities has a specific focus and goal with the overarching question of “How can I contribute here?”
Each young person comes with a variety of skills, experiences, interests and abilities and camp allows them to explore how they can add to a community in a new way.
It’s great to watch each individual realise that they are more than just their grades at school. They might be a great encourager or leader in certain areas. Whether that be through their skill, courage or example.
It is always rewarding to listen to their reflections and questions during activity debriefs and nighttime devotions. It is also a great springboard into our larger conversations about leadership and how that looks at GCC.
A leader is someone who influences the people around them, helps others to be better, and helps those around them achieve.
Now back at the College we continue these conversations as we discuss 2025 Student Leadership and begin to invite each student to look at how they can contribute to our Primary School by either nominating for one of our Primary Leadership roles or by engaging in our Year 6 servant leadership program.
I’m excited to see how this cohort develops and grows into amazing young leaders.
