Year 4 – Discovering the Forces Around Us

This term, Year 4 students have been exploring the exciting world of forces: gravity, magnetism, and friction! These forces are all around us, affecting how things move, stop, or stick together, and students have had a lot of fun seeing them in action.

To make learning hands-on and engaging, students rotated through a series of activity stations. At the marble run station, they watched how gravity pulled the marbles down ramps, experimenting with different heights and angles to see how speed and direction changed. With toy trucks and cars, they tested how different surfaces affected movement, discovering how friction can slow things down or help them grip. Using magnetic building tiles, students explored how magnets attract and push away from each other, testing how distance and materials can affect the strength of the pull.

After the activities, students recorded their observations and shared their ideas with classmates. This reflection helped them connect what they had experienced with the scientific concepts they were learning in class.

It was wonderful to see the curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork as students experimented and asked questions. Some students were amazed at how strong magnets could be, while others enjoyed seeing how a small change in ramp height could make a marble race faster. These hands-on activities made learning about forces fun, interactive, and memorable, giving Year 4 students a deeper understanding of the invisible forces that shape the world around them.
