Year 2 Pizza Day in the Kitchen Garden

There was plenty of excitement in the Kitchen Garden recently as our Year 2 students enjoyed a special pizza-making experience using our new wood-fired pizza oven. The day brought together gardening, design learning, teamwork and, of course, some very delicious food!

Students began by harvesting fresh basil straight from the Kitchen Garden. They carefully picked the fragrant leaves and added them to their bacon and cheese pizzas, learning firsthand how food can move from garden to plate. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to see the connection between growing, preparing and enjoying healthy food.

Once the pizzas were assembled and placed into the pizza oven, students eagerly watched as the flames transformed simple ingredients into golden, bubbling pizzas. The experience sparked plenty of curiosity and discussion as students observed the cooking process and considered how heat changes materials. These real-world learning experiences encourage students to think critically, ask questions and apply their understanding in practical ways.

While the pizzas cooked and cooled, students continued their work in the garden by adding fresh soil to the garden beds. Working together, they demonstrated excellent teamwork, cooperation and perseverance as they helped prepare the beds for future planting. These activities provide valuable opportunities for students to develop important personal and social capabilities such as listening, sharing responsibilities and supporting one another.

As a Christian school, we are thankful for opportunities like these that remind students of God’s provision and the joy of caring for His creation. Through gardening, cooking and working together, students learn to appreciate the many blessings God provides and the importance of being good stewards of His world.

A special thank you to our wonderful P&F for generously funding the pizza oven. It has already become a much-loved addition to our Kitchen Garden program and will provide many rich learning experiences for years to come.
