Sophie and Estah Qualify for State Athletics Championships

Sophie Doyle was the busiest at the two-day championships which saw about 1000 of the best athletes compete to gain qualification to the Qld Schools State Athletics Championships. She was selected in the 800m, 1500m, and long jump but also competed in the tetathlon event. This requires athletes to complete in four events over the two days with points being assigned for times and distances attained. The athlete with the highest points in the 100m, long jump, shot put and 800m events wins.

Sophie began the championships with a fantastic win in the 1500m event running a PB of 5.09 just 3 seconds outside the record. She followed this up with a fast 100m sprint for the Tetra event and then the 11 girls’ championship long jump. She surprised herself and smashed her long jump PB by 50cm! On day two Sophie ran a very tactical 800m race and was just outsprinted in the home straight to place second. The winner broke the Sunshine Coast record and Sophie was just .13sec outside the old record. Only .4sec separated Sophie from the winner of this exciting race. When all points were calculated Sophie was very excited to win the 11 Girls Tetra event and also qualify for the State Championships in the 800m and 1500m races.

Estah Muller has also been training hard for this competition and began the carnival with a surprise 2nd place in her least favourite event – shot put. Estah was very excited with this result. She then competed in her favourite event the 12 girls’ discus event. Estah did not throw as well as she had hoped but still fought it out to place second just one meter behind the winner. She has a chance to shine at the upcoming State Champs where she will aim to throw around the 30m mark which she has been doing in training.

Lincoln Graham ran a fantastic 100m heat to qualify 10th for the 10 boys 100m final. He ran strongly in the fast final improving one place to finish 9th overall which was a great result.

Annaleise Meredith competed in the 10 girls’ discus and showed her classy technique to throw the discus 19.39m. This placed her 4th overall from a large field of 14 athletes, only 1m behind third place which was a fantastic result.

Other athletes competing were:
Isola Lobley – 12 Girls 1500m – 4th, 800m – 6th
Asher Jones – 10 boys 1500m 6th
Sonny Coleman – 10 boys Long jump
