Agricultural Science Students in all grades decided to have an attempt at the UQ Sunflower Growing Competition this year and it looks to be the year of very tall sunflowers. In the four years Glasshouse Christian College has entered this competition, these sunflowers are definitely the tallest ever. It’s going to be very interesting to see how they will get down to UQ on the bus!
The sunflower competition and the varying results that it provides, is a great authentic opportunity for students to explore and ask questions like; why they have grown so tall this year, will the height reduce the sunflower head size, hence lower yield and why? It is the unpredictable nature of Agricultural Science that really enables students to inquire and problem solve in an attempt to explain all the interacting variables and possibilities.
