Spotlight on Learning: Talk for Writing at Glasshouse Christian College

This year, our Prep, Year 2, and Year 3 classrooms have been buzzing with excitement as students dive into Talk for Writing. It has been wonderful to see how naturally they have taken to the program and just how much they are enjoying the process of becoming more confident writers. Teachers frequently comment on the increased engagement during lessons and the noticeable pride students take in their finished pieces.

One of the things we love most about Talk for Writing is that it begins with talking. Students learn to tell a story, discuss ideas, and play with language long before they start writing. This gives them something solid to write from, a bank of ideas, patterns, and tools that they can draw on when they pick up their pencils. It has been so encouraging to see how much more prepared and enthusiastic they are when the writing stage begins.

Across the year levels, students have been exploring both narrative writing and a range of non-fiction text types, including persuasive texts, recounts and information reports. They have loved learning how stories work, experimenting with new vocabulary, and discovering how to organise information clearly. Teachers are noticing that students are not only improving their writing but are also more eager to share their work with others, often reading their pieces aloud with growing confidence.

Because the program has been so successful, we are excited to continue using Talk for Writing next year and to introduce it to even more year levels. We can’t wait to see our young writers continue to grow, create, and enjoy the writing process even more.
