What a fantastic day of Athletics we had at Skippy Park. It was so great to be able to get out and compete together. We loved the way everyone participated so enthusiastically and tried their very best.
There were some amazing performances by our top athletes and it was a pleasure to watch them compete. Records are getting very difficult to break at GCC but eleven students managed to break 21 records between them! Ashton van Straten and Sophie Doyle rewrote their age group records with Ashton breaking five tough records, one of which had stood for 15 years, and Sophie breaking six! Izaak Kwarcianyi also showed his class breaking three records, two of which were held by Ashton.
The house war cries were thunderous and full of passion with Sinai winning this first challenge followed by Ararat and Zion. The House Captains did a fantastic job leading their houses in the War Cries and house decorating. It is always tough to judge tent decorations but this year Ararat was judged the most spectacular with Zion and Sinai in second and third.
It was also rewarding to see everyone doing their very best at each event to score as many points as possible for their house. Students competed in 100m, 200m, 800m, Shot Put, Discus and Long Jump competitions with High Jump being held at GCC. Some fun games and activities between events also filled the day with lots of action and fun. The support that students gave their team members as they competed was a great illustration of the encouraging environment we have at GCC.
Sophie Doyle dominated the 8 year girls competition and won all but the high jump event to score 68 from a possible 70 Age Champion points. Eleven year old Ashton van Starten also won six out of seven events to score 60 points and become 11 year boys Age Champion. Micah Juste-Constant also broke the 11 boys long jump record in his first jump and led the competition until Ashton rebroke the record in his last jump to gain the ten points towards Age Champion and the record.
Izaac Kwarcianyi and Breeanna Aldridge dominated their age groups winning five events each, gaining 62 and 58 points respectively to become 9 boys and 11 girls Age Champions.
The house relays were very exciting as teams of the fastest four students in each house and age group raced around the 400m track to gain valuable points. After all the relays the points were incredibly close with Sinai and Ararat both scoring 164 points and Zion adding 155 to their overall total.
The final points have been calculated and Sinai held onto the lead they had established at the end of the carnival to become Primary Athletics Champions for 2020. Zion also finished strongly becoming runners up with Ararat placing in third. Sinai 1492, Zion 1344, and Ararat 1185.
Congratulations to all students who competed with fantastic sportsmanship and to the best of their ability. It was disappointing that we could not have parents sharing the day with us but we hope you will enjoy the photos of the Carnival.
