During Term 4 last year, our Primary School buzzed with strategy and excitement during our in-house chess competition, held every Friday at lunchtime. Students from Years 1 to 6 showcased their skills and enthusiasm in a six-week challenge which highlighted the growing passion for chess at Glasshouse Christian College.
The competition was split into two divisions: the Masters competition for our experienced players and the Novice competition for those new to the game. Students were placed into these divisions based on their Term 3 scores, ensuring everyone could compete at a level that matched their skills.
The Masters competition was fiercely contested, with every move showcasing strategic brilliance. In the end, the gold medal was awarded to Anika Taylor, whose focus and skill were unmatched. Ari Atkin’s steady gameplay earned him the silver medal, while Zachary Stevens and Sebastian Unwin tied for bronze after an equally impressive performance.
In the Novice competition, enthusiasm was at an all-time high. Laci Doneathy claimed the gold medal, demonstrating how quickly a beginner can master the game. Lucia Aviles took home silver with her thoughtful play, while Abigail Coultis secured bronze with determination and persistence.
Each game was worth a point, and players earned half a point for a draw. Over six weeks, students refined their strategies, learned from their peers, and, most importantly, had fun. The competition concluded with a lively celebration, where all participants were recognised for their efforts. Medals were presented by Mr Ben Jennings, the high school chess club organiser, adding an inspiring touch to the occasion.
Congratulations to all our players for their dedication and sportsmanship throughout the competition! We can’t wait to see what the next year holds for chess at GCC. Whether you’re a master or a novice, the chessboard will always have a place for you.
