Primary Athletes District Champions!

After two exciting days of competition our Primary District Athletics team were announced District Champions for 2014!! Every member of the team contributed to this win and we are very proud of them all. The weather threatened rain but almost all events were contested in fine weather, much to the relief of athletes and spectators.

The team got off to a great start on day one with the 800m runs. Amity Roser led from start to finish winning her 10 Year race but Emily Roach was hot on her heels running a fantastic race to finish second. Declan Martin followed next and ran a well-judged race to gain a treasured victory, not letting pre-race nerves effect his run. Patrick McKenzie and Bakani Kombanie led out strongly and settled into a comfortable pace in the 12 year boys race. The lead changed several times but Bakani strode into the lead down the back straight looking very strong. He was challenged by a fast finish from a Landsborough athlete up the home straight and these boys sprinted to the finish line. Bakani was just pipped on the line and was placed second by 2cm!! Patrick ran a strong last lap to gain third place.

Lainey Greive and Cassidy Ferris were announced Age Champions and Laura Vobr was Runner up in the 11 year girls. Laura showed her class and commitment to training winning both the shotput and discus events by a considerable distance. Lainey won the 9 girls 200m, placed second in the 80m sprint and second in the long jump. Cassidy showed her all around ability winning the 100m and 200m sprints and placing second in shot put.  Jaylah Daunt also had a busy two days winning the 12 girls long jump, second in discus, third in 100m and third in the 200m. The high jump event still needs to be completed before 12 year age champions are decided.

11 year old boys Noah Woolston and Damien Tomokino also had a great day winning the shot put and discus respectively. Both boys also won these events last year but are improving every year.

There were many second and third places achieved by athletes who jumped, threw and ran really well. Tara Fissenden and Amber Weatherburn finished second and third in the 12 girls  shot, as did Willow Hildreth and Madeleine Roulston in the 11 girls’ high jump. 12 year old girls Sophie Trevan and Jaylah Daunt ran great 100m races to also finish second and third respectively. Julian Munyard jumped superbly in the high jump clearing 1.20 m to place second and qualify for the Regional Carnival with Jacques Theron placing third.

Our relay teams performed fantastically gaining valuable points towards the trophy. The 12 year girls ran a very convincing race leading from start to finish with Jaylah holding off the fast finishing St Michaels team. This was the third year in a row this team have won. The ten year girls also had a great run and won their relay with the 9 year boys and 11 year girls placing second.

The team would like to thank all the parents who came along to support them during the two day carnival. Your help as officials at events was also much appreciated. We had 12 students selected to represent the Glasshouse District at the Sunshine Coast Regional Athletics Championships coming up in September.
