New venue a hit at Primary Athletics Carnival

Our GCC Primary Athletics Carnival was held at the Sunshine Coast University track this year due to Skippy Park being too wet to use. Students flooded into the venue from the many buses ready for a day of exciting competitions.

Students were thrilled to be able to run on the tartan track and felt like “real athletes” using this facility. Events were run in rotations with all students throwing shot put and discus, jumping long jump and high jump and also running a 100m and 200m race. The 800m event had been run prior to the carnival due to time restraints at this venue.

Some great performances were seen in many events and students competed well to win the much-desired ribbons and possible selection into the GCC District team.

Five records were broken during the carnival which is a great result as records are getting harder and harder to break. Ashton van Straten broke the 10 boys 200m record by half a second and the high jump record by 1cm! Max Cashin also broke two records in 12 boys long jump and high jump. Max smashed the long jump record beating the old record by 42cm with a jump of 4.43m. He also added 3cm to the high jump record. The fifth record was broken by Lily Breen. In the very first five minutes of the long jump competition, Lily added 30cm to the 12 girls record setting a new record of 4.34m.

Amy Jones, Breeanna Aldridge, Hannah Gassner and Max Cashin were outstanding in their age groups and all won four out of the possible seven events in the carnival. They were all covered in ribbons by the end of the day!

It was fantastic to see all the students trying their very best at each event. We were all very proud to hear the encouragement students gave every competitor in their age group. Many personal best performances were achieved during the day.

The parents and family members who came along offered great encouragement to everyone and we do appreciate this support.

After all the events the day was won by Ararat who gained the most points followed by Sinai and Zion.

The Age Champions for each age group will receive an award at the Sports Awards evening but they are listed below.
