During the Easter holidays, Year 8 student Hamish White (tenor saxophone), travelled to Xiamen in China to be part of a 10 day Music Youth Exchange through the Sunshine Coast Sister Cities Association.
Seventeen teenagers from ten different schools were chosen to represent the musical youth of the Sunshine Coast. They had been rehearsing as a band every weekend in anticipation of concert performances in Xiamen.
They performed at the Xiamen Music School, the International Children’s Palace (a 10,000 student extra-curricular school), and on a grand stage outside a local shopping mall. Chinese instrumental students also joined them on stage for some songs.
The students were hosted by local families and discovered the complexities of communication in a non-English speaking household. A group of Xiamen student musicians will visit us next year. If you’re a talented instrumental student, this tour experience will be available again in 2017 for those aged 13-17 at that time. For more information please ask Mrs Penny White.
