What a fantastic year of reading we’ve had at GCC! One of the core programs used to promote reading at the College is Scholastic Literacy Pro. The program allows us to evaluate the students’ reading ability and provide them with a Lexile measure to recommend books that are just right for them. Students choose books of interest at home or school to complete a quiz or a Book Hooks Blog review to earn points and words read on their Literacy Pro dashboard. The program’s model to match, monitor and motivate reading provides amazing opportunities for success, meaningful and actionable data for teachers to support students, and the development of key comprehension skills and a love of reading.
In 2023, students in Year 3-8 read a combined total of 132,623,028 words and completed 31,719 quizzes. Many students hit reading targets and saw steady Lexile growth throughout the year. We had 203 Year 3-6 students reach the Gold Achievement level, our highest ever, with our Gold Gallery overflowing in the Library. We also had 28 students read over 1 million words and celebrated with a massive Super Sundae party this week to honour their phenomenal achievements. Byron Lange from Year 6 set a new reading record reading 6,343,067 words, joining the ranks as a Literacy Pro Record Holder.
It is with great pleasure that we announce the Semester 2 Literacy Pro Award recipients. The following Year 3-6 students have been recognised for their Lexile Growth, Points Earned or Words Read in 2023. We acknowledge the students’ outstanding commitment to reading and the outstanding progress they have made this year.
