Year 8 Readers’ Cup
The Year 8 Readers’ Cup team have been busy preparing for the regional competition to be held next Friday October 18. The team called ‘The Novel Bunch’ includes; Alisha Mens, Abela Appuhamy, Jesse Woods, Jordan Bull and Jake Coleman. The Readers’ Cup is an annual competition that rewards students who love to read. Teams are required to read seven novels and one sophisticated picture book that have been selected by Teacher-Librarians and English teachers. Teams compete against each other at the regional competition by answering quiz questions about the books. This year the GCCC team is competing against 16 other schools on the Sunshine Coast. The winning team from the region goes on to compete in the State finals.
Congratulations to Natasha Kukulies who has now read well over 5000 minutes this year. Natasha has been recording her reading minutes using the Minute Mob booklet and has claimed two prizes for her efforts.
The Minute Mob is an optional activity for students in Middle /Secondary students and was launched in Term 2. It’s a fantastic way to promote reading, where students record their daily reading minutes and earn prizes for their achievements. There is no set time limit and students are encouraged to work at their own pace. Prizes are awarded at 2500, 5000, 8500 and 10 000 minutes. Details about the Minute Mob can be found on the library page of the GCCC Moodle and students can collect the Minute Mob booklet from the library or print one out online. Other students completing the Minute Mob are encouraged to let library staff know when they reach the prize levels.
Gold Lexile Awards
The following Year 4-6 students have achieved their Gold Lexile Awards this year and are to be commended on their dedication and reading achievements; Madeline Chigdey, Tate Doneathy, Cassidy Ferris, Lara James, Declan Martin, Kiana Reeves, Briony Spencer, Hunter Bradley, Aiden McKellar, Sarah Mens, Oliver Smith and Lachlan McWilliam. Many students are on the silver level and are very close to achieving the Gold award. The start of the term is a great time to focus on building and continuing great reading habits. I wonder how many more students will reach the top goal by the end of 2014?
At the end of last term the Year One classes were invited to bring in a toy for the annual library toy sleepover. The event celebrates a unit the students completed about toys from the past and present and provided fantastic ideas for a creative writing activity. We had a huge range of toys visit for the sleepover and of course, as usual, the toys had a wonderful time exploring the library and did get up to mischief.
Literature Circle Winners
Year 5 classes recently completed their first Literature Circle unit and created amazing Prezis to celebrate the books they read. It was wonderful seeing the students (and parent helpers) enjoying their novels and weekly chats throughout Term 3. The students pictured below from 5G and 5M were voted by students as the best LC leaders for the term. They are to be commended on their leadership skills and were awarded for their efforts.
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 7 of the Scholastic Book Club will be handed out to students next week along with the Koorong Kids Issue 4. Issue 8 will be the final Book Club for the year and will be sent home in the middle of the term. Please ensure all orders are in by the due dates to ensure that orders can be processed and handed out to families promptly.
See you in the library.
