Last chance – Open Day

Tomorrow, Saturday 15 May between 10am and 2pm is the first Open Day we have held since 2019 and it will be the last one until 2022. This is your last chance to invite your friends and family to this great event.

We love Open Day because it is such a wonderful opportunity to show off our students’ talents and skills. There will be dancing, vocal groups, instrumentals and live music on the grassy lawn outside the library. Even if your child is not performing, this is the perfect time to see what opportunities are available for them and encourage them to explore extra-curricular outlets for holistic development. We will be handing out Open Day programs tomorrow and include a copy below:

Another reason we love Open Day at GCC is because of the buzzing atmosphere on the day. The free train rides serve the purpose of helping people around campus but it is so good to see the children and families enjoying their rides. The animal nursery will be outside Prep Maroon. The baby animals are not only a cute attraction but they serve as a reminder of the opportunities students have when they do their Agricultural Science studies on our farm. The only reason we have the free jumping castle is for the fun of it. Everybody loves a jumping castle!

Speaking of our Agricultural Science farm, Open Day is the only opportunity visitors will have to see it with tours leaving at 10:30am and 12:30pm. Bookings are essential and can be made on the day but places are limited so if you want to avoid disappointment, we recommend you prebook here.

When we invited the first food trucks to our Open Day many years ago, they were so popular that they have now become a firm favourite with everyone. This year the food trucks will be on the lawn outside the library. There will be shade shelters, tables and chairs to relax and enjoy delicious food and live music. This year our food offerings include:

Paco’s Tacos – authentic Mexican food.
Neshama’s loaded cheesy fries and southern fried chicken.
Decadent but delicious doughnuts from Donut Kitchen.
Neddy’s coffees and slushies.
A high tea stall of scrummy sweet and savoury food run by our GCC P and F.
The hearty staple of all good Australian events – a sausage sizzle which is also generously hosted by our P and F volunteers.
Mr Whippy icecreams which will be perfect on the warm sunny day that is forecast for Saturday.
Sushi, chicken nuggets, sausage rolls and more from our own Tuckshop.
Delicious coffee from our DeLorean Project students.

After all that food, you may need to work off some energy by visiting the oval where you can play soccer in the Brisbane Roar inflatable soccer field, join a spin class in our gym or play basketball or volleyball in our wonderful and almost new Sports Centre.

A favourite tradition at GCC’s Open Day is the Eagle Competition. This year it is going to be run by our Student Voice team and they have come up with an exciting idea. There will be six caricatures of six teachers to find. All the details and the entry form will be at the Student Voice stand outside the library. There will be two prizes, each one being a $25.00 movie voucher.

Primrose Kombanie will be holding a competition for dads in F2 and there will also be lots of opportunities to explore secondary subjects and primary classrooms. Most people are blown away when they see our Engineering workshops and T Block but there are also Science laboratories, the new Dance and Drama Studios, a whole wing of Music tutoring rooms and larger areas for bands and instrumental groups. You can also enjoy cooking demonstrations and tastings in our new Hospitality kitchen.

We are so excited to be able to show you inside our spectacular performance hall even though it is still being constructed. This will be the first and only time you can see inside it until it is completed and we want to thank our builders Herron Coorey for making this possible. Inside the 600-seat performance hall, you will be able to chat with GCC Board Members and learn more about the process of this state-of-the-art building. There is also an opportunity to make your own mark and leave a legacy for the future with our “Save Your Seat in the Spotlight” (SYSITS) Project. Our “Save Your Seat In The Spotlight” campaign is the first of its kind that we have launched here at GCC and we really hope you will consider availing yourself of this unique opportunity, one which may never come again. All donors will be recognised with an engraved plaque with your family member’s names, or your business name, mounted to the back of a seat in this state-of-the-art theatre, in acknowledgment of your donation. The location of the seat will be based upon the level of giving: silver, gold, platinum, and lead gifts.

We hope you enjoy Open Day 2021. See you tomorrow!
