Isabella Participates in the 2023 Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP)

During the last week of the holidays, I had the privilege of participating in the 2023 Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) playing clarinet. The program lasted three days and was a fun but rigorous experience, with seven-hour non-stop rehearsals, late nights, and early starts.

The Percy Grainger Wind Orchestra, which I was a part of, was conducted by Jodie Lutherburrow. Over the course of the three-day program, we learnt eight pieces, four of which were showcased at the Queensland Conservatorium. The pieces we performed were Alleluia! Laudamus Te by Alfred Reed, Peace Dancer by Jodie Blackshaw, Kalos Eidos by Carol Brittin Chambers, and Streets of Forbes by David Jones. Personally, I found Streets of Forbes to be my favourite piece. It was based on the NSW town of Forbes in the 1800s, the home of the infamous bushranger Ben Hall, and featured some fun yet challenging clarinet melodies that I thoroughly enjoyed learning and playing.

Being one of 26 clarinetists in such a large band of over 80 musicians was an exhilarating experience, and I am grateful to have been a part of it. SHEP was a great opportunity to play alongside other musicians and to step out of my comfort zone.
