Instrumental Music – Term 1 Roundup

Plenty has been happening in the world of instrumental music at GCC!

We have welcomed some new music tutors this year: Ms Louise King on cello, and Mr Preston Ellis on brass. Ms King is also directing our senior string ensemble ‘Presto Strings’, and Mr Ellis leads the trumpet groups for Year 5 Band. The trombone groups are being led by our very own Year 11 student Euan Caldwell, who is doing a great job inspiring our youngest trombonist.

Our Year 5s have had an exciting first term with their new instruments! All Year 5 students at GCC are fortunate enough to receive a full year of tuition from specialist instrumental tutors, along with free instrument hire, and participation in the Year 5 Band. Our 2024 cohort is shaping up to be one of our most talented yet, we can’t wait to see what they achieve this year.

It’s been a big term for jazz at GCC – our small ensemble ‘Jazz Combo’ performed at a public event at The Ginger Factory in Yandina, and our large ensemble ‘Big Band’ has started up again now led by the very talented Miss Meeka Ireland. You can check out both jazz groups at Open Day later this year.

We also have a brand new Woodwind Ensemble run by long-term tutor Mrs Emily Salonen. This ensemble focuses on a chamber music style of playing. Their debut performance will be at Open Day as well.

Lastly, our concert bands, ‘Wind Orchestra’ (yr 5 – 7) and ‘Symphonic Winds’ (Year 8 – 12), are busy preparing for their ANZAC Day performances early in Term 2. They will perform first at the school service, and then at the Beerwah community service where they will be joined by the Beerwah State High School band. GCC band students enjoyed a combined rehearsal with the Beerwah High band on Monday this week, including their conductor. It was fantastic to have so many young musicians in the same room, where they shared their knowledge and built a rich ensemble sound together. Our string groups ‘Dolce Strings’ (primary) and ‘Presto Strings’ (secondary) will be combining for ANZAC Day as well – look out for them at the school service.

There is still some availability for instrumental lessons with our fabulous GCC tutors – you may even be eligible for FREE instrument hire. Be sure to ask Mrs Olek for more information!
