Hospitality students were privileged to visit Oakland Farms to learn more about the paddock to plate journey.
Students were surprised at how many different varieties of strawberries were grown at Oaklands and even more surprised by the differences in taste, size and texture.
Hospitality teacher Colleen Devitt said the excursion was very valuable for the students’ understanding. “They learned things on the farm that they could never fully grasp in a classroom,” she said.
John Allen from Oaklands Farms was good enough to delay pulling up the plants so the students could enjoy picking and eating as many strawberries as they wanted. Between them, they must have picked about 40kg worth of strawberries!
Students also learned a lot about the economic principles of supply and demand and how this directly affects business right back to the farm.
Thanks to John Allen and Oaklands Farms for their hospitality and generosity.
