Congratulations to our very own Jemma Ritson who took out the Holmes Junior Art Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art 2020. This award is hosted by Sunshine Coast Council and sponsored by the Friends, Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc.

Jemma’s ‘Glorious Casuarious‘ caught the judge’s eye from the start for its fine detail and colour.  They particularly loved the strong connection of the cassowary with the viewer brought out by the fine eye lashes and expression on its face. “The artist shows great ability with the medium depicting her subject realistically and with great presence. Superbly done Jemma, congratulations.”

Jemma chose to draw a cassowary because she wanted to depict their prowess, strength and beauty. She wanted to show that, despite their strength and intimidating size, cassowaries have an inquisitive nature and personality. Jemma chose colour pencils as her medium as she likes the control and detail they provide.

Jemma’s prize-winning artwork can be viewed in the theatrette at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve until 11 October 2020.
