Holiday reading

Looking for ways to encourage your child to read over the holidays? Here are some great options to consider:

Summer Reading Club

The Summer Reading Club will be available online from Wednesday 1 December 2021 to Monday 31 January 2022. It’s a flexible, fun and practical program that has been purpose built for children and families to use in a fun and safe way. The site is refreshed each year with a host of interactive challenges that encourage children to read or write something every day throughout the summer holidays. To help keep children motivated there are creative and theme based challenges to complete. By taking part online, participants can set up their profile, choose their own avatar and earn fun rewards, including digital badges. They can also share their completed reading challenges, book reviews and artwork, and interact with other Club members from across the state!

Summer Reading Club Incentives:

  • There are thirty activity badges to earn over the course of the challenge
  • Each badge unlocked rewards participants with a ticket into the prize draw
  • Bonus tickets are earned for submitting reviews

Prize packs to be won:

  • $50 Bookstore voucher
  • $50 Game store voucher
  • $50 Toy store voucher
  • Family book packs (for little readers 0-5)

The Summer Reading Club ends Monday 31 January 2022. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 2 February 2022.

Visit your local library

Membership is free at the Sunshine Coast Libraries and gives you access to the latest books, movies, music and much more. Free WiFi is available at the eight branches and two mobile libraries. If these rainy days continue, a visit to your local library could be a great option. Go to this link for more details.

Visit the Story Seats – 10 seats, 10 stories, 10 parks…

Head off on a book-venture with your family and find all the Story Seats (Map). The Sunshine Coast Council have designed and constructed 10 innovative Story Seats, located in 10 of the Coast’s most stunning local parks, and have incorporated 10 fabulous children’s stories into the seats’ designs. These eye-catching pieces of art have been purpose-built with the intention to promote the importance of reading with your child and offer spaces that actively encourage you to talk, read, sing and play with your child every day.

eBooks Options

Sunshine Online and Literacy Pro

Primary students have access to the Sunshine Online website all holidays via the Primary Gateway Library Page. The eBooks are narrated to support the reader and include activities, games, songs, raps and rhymes. Year 3-6 students can access Literacy Pro eBooks online and complete quizzes until the 31 December. Access the link to Literacy Pro on the Primary Gateway Library Page.

Wheelers eBooks

Secondary students have access to the Wheelers ePlatform over the holidays. There are 1000’s of eBooks and 100’s of eAudiobooks from a range of genres and interest areas for students to select. The GCC Wheelers Platform is accessed from the LIbrary page on Gateway and students use their school login details to sign in to borrow. The ePlatform collections have been very popular across the year and can be accessed on any device using the Wheelers Platform App.  New titles are added each month and students can also reserve and request titles of interest.

Have a blessed Christmas.
