Highlights of Compassion Week

Compassion Week was a massive success in school unity. We had Tropical (Primary) and Pyjama (Secondary) Dress Days. There were special Chapel Services with even a guest from Compassion International. In Secondary School, Year Level Coordinators were slimed in a Green Gloop. In Primary School, they ate pizza and poppers while learning how to live compassionately.

Compassion International’s slogan states, “releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name.” The goal for us Christians, because we love God, is to live out our faith by extending our care and concern for anyone and everyone. This includes people we know but also people that we’ll never know or have the opportunity to meet. All twelve of GCC’s Compassion children live in the Philippines. Our family even supports two kids through Compassion who live in Colombia. One of my kids’ favourite tasks each School holiday is to write or draw a picture to their “pen pal” in Colombia. I would encourage you to have your children write or draw a letter to their year level’s Compassion child in the Philippines during their upcoming break. Then bring in your notes, letters, drawings or pictures to us, Pastors. Or perhaps you would like to go one step further and sponsor a child as a family too: https://www.compassion.com.au/sponsor-a-child

A highlight for me was Thursday afternoon when our YLCs in Secondary School agreed to be slimed in Jesus’ name because their year level raised $500. Amazingly, all Secondary years hit that mark, so six teachers came home GREEN. While the slime itself was spectacular, the students’ faces seeing some of their favourite educators covered in gloop was priceless. We all did something together, something that felt good, something that changes lives. In Secondary school, the students raised close to $4000, which doesn’t even include Primary’s total, which is always special.
