The Year 5 and 6 students have been competing against other Glasshouse Schools in AFL at Interschool Sport this term. The competition ran over just two weeks and teams played six games each in either A or B divisions.
The teams had been learning AFL in PE lessons last term and have been training this term during lunchtimes. We have many students who play AFL as their chosen sport so they really helped our teams this year.
The conditions were extremely hot during week one games but the students coped well as plenty of ice and shade were available. Halves were only twelve minutes long so goals needed to be kicked quickly. Every team improved over the two weeks and worked well together as teams.
The A Boys team won all but one game which was a fantastic effort. They had the experience of Jared Moss, Charlie Atkinson, Eli Hardy-Abdy, Jake McGilvray and Oliver Thornton who regularly play AFL and certainly showed outstanding ball skills and game play. They worked together well and were supported by many other talented athletes who can play any sport well. Glasshouse Mountains proved to be the toughest opposition but possession was about even in the game. The difference between the sides was the accuracy of kicking. Glasshouse Mountains’ kicks scored goals whereas our kicks scored behinds so they gained an advantage on the scoreboard with the score ending 7 – 20.
The A girls team were also very competitive and won four out of six games. In the first game they were a little reluctant to tackle the opposition but as confidence grew so did their ball possession and scores. Lily Breen and Indiah Loveday combined well to kick the ball up field and score many goals. The whole team were determined and worked hard for each other.
The B teams both had a spread of wins and losses and both teams improved heaps over the six games. It was fantastic to have lots of parents there cheering the teams on and supporting us.
It has been a great year of Interschool Sport with the Year 6 and 7 students. Year 6 students can look forward to lots of sporting opportunities in Year 7 and the Year 5 students have another exciting year of sport as Year 6 students.
