Future Pathways Newsletter 22 August 2014

The Sunshine Coast Trade Training Centre (SCTTC) will hold its information night on 27 August 2014, beginning at 6.30pm. Students wanting to pursue trade based careers in Engineering and Construction are encouraged to attend this evening.

Year 12 Interviews for Tertiary/TAFE begin the week of 25 August. Appointments can be made through Mrs Parker and Mr Nash on 5439 0033.

Its important to remember that whilst you have 6 preferences on your QTAC application, you are not obliged to fill all six in.

A good guide is the first two preferences should be the student’s ‘IDEALISTIC ’courses, the next two the ‘REALISTIC’ courses and the last two being the ‘FOOT IN THE DOOR’ courses. An example of a Foot in the Door course would be completing at least the first year of a Diploma in Business, then being awarded a RANK and subsequently applying for a Bachelor of Business in 2016.

Interstate applications are NOT processed through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). Apply online for NSW at www.uac.edu.au; Victoria at www.vtac.edu.au ; South Australia at www.satac.edu.au and Western Australia at www.tisc.edu.au .

Often students at the end of Year12 do not feel they have the skills and knowledge to succeed in undergraduate studies, as do many adults. However, if there is still the desire to still pursue University studies, there is a pathway that makes this possible.

The Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP) is offered through the University of the Sunshine Coast as one way to bridge that gap. It is a free course to domestic students. Students must be 17 years of age and further information on the application process is available at www.usc.edu.au/tpp . The USC offers a TPP Educational Access Grant to eligible students, to reimburse the cost of the QTAC application fee.

Mature age entry into the TPP is often the starting point for many adults who then go on and successfully complete Tertiary Studies.

Aside from the USC Sippy Downs site, one can study some of the TPP courses at other USC campuses such as Caboolture and North Lakes. Subjects that can be studied in the TPP include: TPP101 Academic Skills for Success, TPP102 Computer Literacy,TP111 Business Study Skills.

Year 10 students are currently completing their SET PLAN interviews with Mr Heyworth and Mr Nash.  At times the question arises regarding enrolling in Distance Education Subjects and programs at other schools.

The following advice has been received from the Brisbane School of Distance Education: Students may study a maximum of 2 subjects at BSDE; students studying a subject at BSDE should drop a subject at their base school. Further information can be obtained from the BSDE ‘s website at:
www.brisbanesde.eq.edu.au . Students contemplating doing Distance Education should raise this option in their SET PLAN interviews and the reasons behind their decision.

Once again, as with the subjects offered through BSDE, it is advisable to discuss these options with Mr Heyworth, Head of Senior Studies and or Mr Nash, Future Pathways Co-ordinator. Costs of these courses, and the impact they may have on the student’s school program at Glasshouse Christian College, need to be assessed..

TAFE Brisbane and TAFE East Coast handbooks for 2015 are both out, as are Expression of Interest Forms for the Sunshine Coast Trade Training Centre. These are available at the Future Pathways Office.

Year 12s: Scholarship Information from The Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust for Year 12 Leavers. Applications for 2015 open in August 2014 and close on 31 October 2014.

The Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) is a national independent charity administering tertiary scholarships for children and grandchildren of ex-service men and women. Visit the website address at www.avcat.org.au for further information.
