Did you know that French used to be the sixth most spoken language but now it has moved up to fifth place and is still growing!
An article by Linsey Chutel states that it is the African countries that are making French a truly global language. “There are now 300 million people on five continents who speak French.” First place is taken by Chinese, second is English with third being Spanish and fourth Arabic. Speaking French has increased by almost 9.6% since 2014.
These statistics and information are an encouragement to our French teachers and students. As a Christian College, we may play a part in equipping our students for careers and ministries in African countries as 68% of sub-Saran African countries speak French. Surprisingly, only 3% of the world’s French speakers live in Europe!
