Fiji Mission Trip – Join us in Prayer

This August, 22 Senior School students are heading to Fiji for a Missions Trip. For some, this will be their first time abroad and for others, they’ve never been on a ministry trip or camp before. During this trip they will be partnering with the College of Theology and Evangelism Fiji (CTEF), local schools, churches and neighbourhoods. For a few, it is a once in lifetime experience and others will go again and again because they develop an appetite to share Jesus to all.

At Glasshouse Christian College we believe in the power of sending students on missions. I believe it is the pinnacle or crown jewel in the education experience. I think every Christian needs to participate in at least one trip in their lifetime. Additionally, if they attend a mission trip before adulthood it alters the course of their life. It allows them to develop empathy, selflessness and learn about poverty and gain a global perspective early in their existence.

In the Bible, the apostle James said that people are like vapour appearing for a little while and then vanishing (James 4:14). Our lives are so short on the “timeline”. Why should a student or anyone waste time going on a mission trip? Well, first because God commanded it:

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Well, why do you have to go overseas? Can not missions be done locally? Some people need help on the Sunshine Coast? The Bible says we are to make disciples of all nations and to be his witnesses locally and globally (Matthew 28:19, Acts 1:8). So it’s not Sunshine Coast or Suva, but both.

Do short-term Mission trips really leave a lasting impact? Firstly, they certainly do for the people that go. Secondly, I’ve witnessed whole families overseas changed, because a group faithfully went. At GCC we have built a long-term relationship with people in Fiji that has been ongoing for 13+ years. The last time we went was in 2018 with plans to go in 2020 and obviously that changed due to the pandemic. This is the first time we are returning as a school post covid. So our short- term mission trips link together creating a more enduring impact in the community. The alumni that have gone in years past will have fond memories of their time in Fiji linking them to the class of 2024.

So will you join in prayer?
