Exciting Opportunities Await: Join the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Program!

Dear Year 9 and 10 Families at GCC

I am thrilled to introduce you to the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Program available here at GCC for Year 9 students and above. It’s an exceptional opportunity for our young individuals to embark on a journey of personal growth and skill development.

Starting the program in Year 9 provides students with ample time to complete their Gold level before reaching Year 12, should they choose to pursue it. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is globally recognised, designed to equip young people with essential life and work skills through various challenges and experiences.

Here’s a glimpse into what the program entails:

Key Elements:

– Open to all young people aged 14 to 24

– Three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each offering progressively more challenging tasks.

What’s Involved:

Participants engage in three sections, dedicating 1 hour per week to each:

– Physical Recreation

– Skills

– Voluntary Service

Adventurous Journeys:

Participate in 2 adventurous journeys for each level.

– Bronze level: 2 days, 1 night

– Silver level: 3 days, 2 nights

– Gold level: 4 days, 3 nights

– Gold (residential project): 5 days, 4 nights

Achieving an Award:

The program recognises individual goal setting, persistence, and achievement. It’s also recognised as a course of study for the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), offering up to 4 credits.

Time Requirements:

– Bronze: minimum 6 months

– Silver: minimum 6 months (if Bronze completed), otherwise 12 months

– Gold: minimum 12 months (if Silver completed), otherwise 18 months

Impact on Young Individuals:

Participants undergo a transformative journey where they:

– Strive for personal excellence

– Learn responsibility and decision-making

– Engage with their community

– Make tangible contributions to society

– Cultivate perseverance and essential life skills

– Enhance career prospects

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program has a longstanding presence in over 130 countries, with millions of young people benefiting worldwide.

Fundamentals of the Award:

– Encourages independent decision-making and prioritization

– Inclusive framework catering to diverse youth

– Builds social infrastructure and fosters youth development and inclusion

The program is entirely voluntary, offering participants the freedom to choose activities aligned with their interests and ambitions.

Cost:

While GCC covers most expenses related to adventurous journeys, families are responsible for registration fees:

– Bronze level: $180.15

– Silver Award: $185.50

– Gold Award: $190.75
