Our Primary District Cross Country team were absolutely fabulous running their hearts out to narrowly win the Glasshouse District Cross Country title for the fourth year in a row.
We all knew the competition was particularly close this year as Elimbah and GCCC took turns winning placings in each race. The final score saw the two schools separated by only three points after six hard fought races. Many of our students ran faster times than they had run at our College Cross Country.
GCCC clinched the title in the last race of the day, the 12 boys event. Bakani Kombanie led from the gun and showed everyone his class as he looked effortless running the 3km course in just 12 minutes. Behind him Patrick McKenzie and Lachlan McWilliam were doing battle with the Elimbah runners and dug deep and ran fantastic races finishing 3rd and 5th respectively.
Earlier in the morning Cassidy Ferris showed great determination when she took a wrong turn near the beginning of her race. She retraced her steps back onto the course but had lost many places. Cassidy did not let this put her off and she surged back into the lead over the next 200m. She was challenged for most of the race with a runner just five metres behind her, but her determination earnt her the win in a well judged race. Molly McCaughey also excelled, running very strongly over the final 500m to secure fifth position.
Amity Roser ran a solo race at the front of the 11 year girl’s field. She also led from the gun closely followed by Emily Roach and Isobel Holley. These girls demonstrated absolute courage as they fought off attacking runners throughout the race. Emily held on strongly to finish in 3rd place and Isobel was pipped for 5th place on the finish line after an intense sprint finish, just missing a spot on the District team.
Jacob Broderick led our team of 11 year old boys with Sam Townson and Declan Martin all pushing hard to place in the top five positions. Jacob finished in 4th place and qualified to compete in the Regional Cross Country Champs with Declan and Sam in 6th and 7th places respectively.
The 10 year boys and the 12 year girls ran well but found the pace rather quick with Chloe Dunford and Daemon Cruise finishing 7th and the others finishing in the middle of the pack.
This team of athletes have trained hard over the past two months and fully deserved the results they achieved. We look forward to eight of them competing in the Sunshine Coast Regional Cross Country Championships.
Glasshouse District Cross Country Results – First five finishers selected into Glasshouse District Team. There were about 30 runners in each race.
