Did your child really do nothing at school today?

Did your child really do nothing at school today?

I can assure you that the school day is full of exciting learning opportunities that are well planned and creatively thought out by our amazing staff.  From the front seat of the car on the journey home or perhaps sitting around the dinner table, you ask the age-old question – ‘how was your day?’  The standard response in most households would probably be something like, ‘nothing’ or ‘boring’.  Perhaps we need to change the question to get a different answer.

Questions to ask instead of ‘how was your day?’

  • Did someone do something funny today?
  • What did you do at break time today?
  • Did someone do something kind today?
  • Who made you laugh today?  What happened?
  • Tell me 3 different times you used your pencil today.
  • Was anyone absent today?
  • Who did you sit with at eating time today?
  • If there was something from home that you wished you had at school what would it be?
  • Did you sing any songs today?
  • What new fact did you learn today?
  • If you could pick one of your classmates to be the teacher who would you pick?
  • What challenged you today?
  • What made you feel proud today?
  • What made your teacher smile today?

My hope is that these conversation starters will spark a larger conversation in your home this week.  If you are in Prep to Year 2 and are looking for other insights into the school day, please check out the classroom blogs on each Gateway page.
