The use of multimedia content within design education has a variety of benefits. On top of providing an alternative medium for teaching which inherently improves student engagement and motivation, multimedia learning helps students to gain an enhanced understanding and retention of important content in the classroom.

We were given the privilege of having the Inspired Education Australia team host their Design Masterclass at our campus. Our students collaborated to solve a real-world ‘Wicked Problem’. The problem/design challenge was, ‘How might we integrate smart transport options for the residents of the Glasshouse Region?’ With this, they were also provided the opportunity to experiment with the latest Virtual Reality technology. Given the immediate feedback that Virtual Reality can offer, the students were able to experience a hypothesised solution to their ‘Wicked Problem’ in real-time.

Many industries are already adopting VR to aid in design, prototyping and training. Therefore, this multi-sensory medium of learning not only enables design students to have hands-on practice without the inhibition of physical constraints but also exposes them to an industry standard of methodologies. Ultimately giving them a competitive edge when seeking a professional career.

This was a fantastic introduction to VR for our students.
