Cross Country Champions for fifth year - Glasshouse Christian College

Cross Country Champions for fifth year

  • May 25, 2015

It was an exciting day last Monday as the Primary District Cross Country showed their class at the Glasshouse District Cross Country Championships winning the title and trophy for the fifth year consecutive year.

Our team of nineteen fit Year 4 – 6 students used their nervous energy to help them start strongly in each race and gain fifteen top ten placings and enough points to win. Ten students qualified for the Regional Cross Country Champs and seven students won medals which was fantastic. Cassidy Ferris, Amity Roser and Declan Martin all won their races to become District Champions.

The ten year olds raced first with Lilli-Jean Cruise, Amy Trevan and Lainey Grieve starting strongly. Lilli-Jean ran consistently in third place for most of the race with Lainey and Amy battling for the fifth regional qualifying spot. Lainey finished 5th and Amy 6th.  Jack Lecky ran a cracking pace knocking 30 seconds off his College cross country time finishing 4th after a strong sprint finish to gain this placing. Nathan Kennedy and Bryce Sambrook also ran almost 30 seconds faster finishing in 7th and 10th respectively.

Cassidy Ferris showed her patience and experience during her race as she ran behind the leading runner for the first half of her race but then stepped up the pace and gained a very commanding lead. She looked very strong as she ran up the home straight to win by about 300m. Molly McCaughey maintained her pace throughout and ran a PB to finish 7th and Caitlin Moore finished 17th.

Daemon Cruise also tracked the leading runner throughout his 11 year race but was unable to hold on as he kicked away to finish but Daemon continued strongly to finish second, 15 seconds faster than his GCC time. Lincoln McKenzie ran bravely after being unwell to finish in 7th position.

Amity Roser repeated her race from last year, leading from start to finish. Her long loping strides make her look effortless as she runs but she assures us she used all her energy to get the win. Isabel Holley and Kiana Reeves both ran fantastic races with Isabel holding her 5th position throughout most of the race but Kiana slowly made her way through the field passing many runners to finish in 7th place.

The race that clinched the District Championship and caught the eye of the crowd was the 12 year boys race. It was a very proud 12 minutes for all GCC supporters as we watched our three boys dominate the race. Declan Martin ran straight to the front closely followed by Nik Webb and Jacob Broderick. The boys stayed together for the entire race with no more than about 15 meters separating them at any stage. Nearing the finish line Jacob Broderick made his move and overtook Nik on his way to catch Declan. The boys had a sprint finish up the home straight with Declan holding off the challenge from Jacob to win by only one second! First, second and third to GCC! That result gave GCC maximum points and enough to gain a convincing lead over Elimbah State School who had been only five points behind us before this race.

We are very proud of this team who have trained hard and competed really well. The parents who supported this team were fantastic supporting every team member and leading the cheering squad from the sideline.
