Creativity in Full Colour: SCIPHA Visual Arts Excellence Day

Recently, three of our Year 6 students had the privilege of attending the SCIPHA Visual Arts Excellence Day hosted by Coolum Beach Christian College.

Our hosts described it as a joy to welcome such enthusiastic and talented young artists, noting that our students were thoroughly engaged, demonstrated impressive creative flair, and represented Glasshouse Christian College with excellence. Their interpretations of the task were unique, and they were commended for their willingness to encourage and support others throughout the day.

Below, Scarlett A, Scarlett F and Gracie G share their reflections on this vibrant and inspiring experience.

Recently, we had the exciting opportunity to attend a SCIPHA Day of Excellence with a special focus on art. It was a fantastic day filled with creativity, colour and new techniques, especially learning how to create a painting “in the negative”.

Painting in the negative is the opposite of a typical painting. Instead of painting the main object first, we covered the whole canvas with bright background colours. Once the paint had dried, we drew our object on top using white chalk. Then, rather than painting the object itself, we carefully painted white gesso around the outside of the shape, covering the rest of the canvas. We left the middle part (the shape of our object) showing the original background colours. This made the design stand out in a bold and creative way.

After preparing the background, we used stencils and sponges to add patterns. We experimented with glitter glue and paint pens to create interesting textures and details. The final effect was eye-catching and unique.

Everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed different parts of the process.

Scarlett A’s favourite part was completing her final design, which was a beautiful bird surrounded by flowers and leaves.

Scarlett F most loved experimenting with colour, designing a giant leaf with bubbles around it.

Gracie enjoyed adding the fine details. She also created a leaf with bubbles surrounding it.

It was an inspiring day that helped us think differently about art and experiment with new techniques. We are proud of our creative achievements and grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a fun and enriching workshop.
