Chess Club continues to thrive at Glasshouse Christian College! More than 40 students have come along so far this year to just have a go, learn to play or join our in-house competition.
On Friday, we entered two teams into the annual Interschool Chess Competition organised by the Sunshine Coast Independent Primary Heads Association. It was a whole day of chess hosted by Suncoast Christian College. Two teams of four students played seven games of chess each. Many of the competitors had substantially more experience than the GCC students which made our success even more remarkable.
The GCC first team, made up of Cooper Beavan, Bryce Stout, Connor Boss and Tyler Watson, came second in their division using a ‘count back’ method having gained 16 points which equalled the winning team. The GCC second team consisted of Archie Thomsen, Sarannah Leary, Evie Coulson and Lauren Stout all did really well, winning a high number of games and gaining valuable competition experience.
A special mention goes to Bryce Stout, Cooper Beavan and Connor Boss who all experienced making it to the top tables of the competition where they were required to use special chess timers. They also had fantastic wins against highly ranked players. The stand-out result of the day was Bryce Stout (Year 5) who had tremendous wins against some of the best players on the coast and came first place for the whole competition with six wins from seven games.
