This week we celebrated a truly magical Book Week, where reading took center stage across the College. The Primary Book Week Parade and Secondary Character Day events were filled with colour and excitement as students and staff showcased an exceptional array of characters from their favourite books. The Reading is M.A.G.I.C theme sparked imaginations and inspired creative costumes from beloved stories like Magic Beach by Allison Lester, Possum Magic by Mem Fox, and The Magic School Bus by Joanna Cole. A heartfelt thank you to our GCC community for partnering with us and for your dedication to bringing ideas and costumes to life, making these events truly unforgettable! Thank you also for visiting our annual Book Fair. It’s our hope that these experiences nurture a love of reading that will last a lifetime.

Celebrating a Milestone Anniversary
It was with great pleasure that we accepted an invitation from Her Excellency the Governor, the Honourable Dr Jeanette Young AC PSM to attend a Reception at Government House this week to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Children’s Book Council of Australia – Queensland Branch. The CBCA aims to highlight the importance of reading through their commitment to community outreach programs and the organisation of the state wide Readers Cup competition which we are involved in annually. As proud long term members of the CBCA it was a delight for Vanessa McKellar, our Head of Library Services to attend as our representative from the College, acknowledging this milestone alongside fellow colleagues and celebrating our shared commitment to children’s literature.
Building our Reading Stamina
In the lead-up to Book Week, our focus in Primary has been building our reading stamina. Using sand timers, students have been tracking their daily reading, earning pom poms for every 10 minutes of reading – demonstrating just how quickly time adds up when you read consistently. We’ve also celebrated our favorite genres by creating a paper chain that ended up stretching from one end of the library to the other. Together, we’ve explored the Children’s Book Council of Australia Shortlisted and Notable titles, finding inspiration in these amazing stories and information books.

French ‘Book Tasting’ Cafe
Inspired by the Paris Olympics, our weekly Book Tastings at the French Book Café have invited students to explore a variety of genres in a cozy, relaxed setting. We’ve journeyed through M – for Mystery, A – for Adventure, G – for Genres, I – for Inspirational Reads, and C – for Comedy, with surprise guests each week adding an extra layer of excitement. The carefully curated book selections have celebrated the magic of reading and captivated the students’ interest in new genres, authors, and series to explore.

Secondary Character Day 2024
Book Week Character Day 2024 was a vibrant celebration filled with enthusiasm, colour and creativity, as students and staff across our Secondary school brought quirky, fun, and inspiring characters to life. Choosing a character from a novel or a film script can be challenging and exciting with so many fantastic options – so who would you pick? Together, staff and students celebrated the power of books to enchant, inspire, and ignite our imaginations, with characters from classic novels, beloved picture books, and thrilling adventure stories. Once again, we were reminded that reading takes us on a fantastic journey, with each page offering new adventures and insights, immersing us in worlds where anything is possible! Whether exploring fantastical realms, unravelling mysteries, or gaining fresh perspectives, the journey through reading is transformative and well worth the investment of our time.
Take the time to enjoy the images captured by our fantastic staff across the day – a great way to ‘Show and Tell’ that;
‘Reading is….Marvellous.Adventurous.Global.Inspirational.Captivating’!!!
