Block Printing Incursion with Sapling Textiles

Last term, Kristy Xavier from Sapling Textiles joined us to chat about all things ethical manufacturing, fast vs slow fashion, and the impact our shopping habits have on the environment. Beginning the lesson with an interactive activity, the students were tasked with inspecting multiple garments with three questions in mind; What is the fabric? How long did it take to make? How much would it sell for?

This opened up discussions about the reality of the fast fashion industry and how closely it’s associated with poor working conditions, low wages, child labour, and enormous amounts of textile waste. Naturally many students were shocked by this, having not thought about the origin of their clothing or the impact their purchases have. In a world where consumerism is at an all-time high, it’s important to understand how much of a difference one can make.

In contrast to the speed of fast fashion, slow fashion offers a more mindful approach. It prioritises craftsmanship, ethical working conditions, fair wages and, the use of natural or recycled fibres. Garments are created to last years and transcend the trends and fast-paced cycle of the fashion industry.

Kristy explained that the consumer is in control of the demand; if we continue supporting and buying fast fashion, the more it is produced. She encouraged the students to continue thinking about their spending habits and to be curious about where their garments are coming from. While this alone won’t mark the end of fast fashion, having these discussions and understanding our own habits is a wonderful start.

Afterwards, the students were taught the technique of Indian handblock printing. Block printing is a delicate craft that has been perfected and passed down over many centuries, it involves pressing and stamping ink onto fabric with a carved wooden block. Students carefully chose their blocks, coloured paint and placement, and by practising patience and precision they created their own patterns and designs. They turned out beautifully!

Thank you to Kristy and Somar for generously giving us your time, for your thought-provoking discussions and for sharing this incredible technique with our students. We are so grateful.

If ever you find yourself wandering the streets of Maleny, please pop into Sapling Textiles. Not only is it an incredibly beautiful and inspiring space, but it also showcases the work of local artisans and craftspeople and provides a comprehensive range of haberdashery.
